Dry Manicures

Dry russian manicures are superior to traditional wet manicures for several reasons. A wet manicure involves softening the cuticle with water and chemicals, scraping away the cuticle, and (often excessively) cutting away the skin surrounding the nail. A dry manicure removes the cuticle by exfoliation with an e-file and a gentle fine diamond grit bit. This process is much more precise and gives a cleaner looking result. The skin surrounding the nail is also gently exfoliated, and only dry dead skin is cut away.

A dry manicure also improves gel retention. The natural nail is like a sponge that can absorb a large amount of water causing it to swell. If the nails are swollen with water and then gel is applied, once the nail dries out and shrinks it will want to pull away from the gel layer on top. Dry nails and proper prep is essential to 3-5 week gel retention.

Structured Gel Overlay

A structured gel overlay is a technique of applying gel as a protective and reinforcing layer over the natural nail. Gel products that can be applied with this technique are primarily base gels, builder gels, or hard gels. The gel product that will be best for you depends on the strength and flexibility of your nails, your desired length, and your lifestyle.
